Structure Fires Staffing Tactics and Safety

THIS IS A NEW COURSE DEVELOPED SPECIFICALLY FOR THIS YEAR’S FIRE SCHOOL. LINE AND STAFF OFFICERS WHO ARE INTERESTED IN FIRE GROUND SAFETY SHOULD MAKE THIS A “MUST COME” CLASS!!!
Are we sacrificing proven methods in strategy and tactics when fighting structure fires? We have improved our personal protection and technology, but are we repeatedly violating tried and true principles? How does adequate staffing insure proper tactics that increase firefighter safety and survivability?
We will look at common patterns seen in 30 years of NIOSH reports that resulted in firefighter fatalities. We will use this information to retrospectively consider how firefighter survival was impacted by the strategy and tactics that were employed, and how this was affected by staffing levels. A common list of 25 factors will be explored so that we can learn from the experiences offered by others. We will investigate how inadequate staffing for pre-incident functions (fire code compliance enforcement, training, pre-incident planning, and administrative functions) negatively impacts firefighter survivability.
